Miley Cyrus has hinted she was ready to split from Liam Hemsworth in February.

The singer and actor recently ended months of speculation when they confirmed their engagement is off.

Miley has now opened up about writing her song Drive earlier this year, admitting she was unhappy with her life at the time.

“I wrote it while I was working on Valentine’s Day – emotionally it was such a hard time,” she told Fashion Magazine.

“It is about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It’s a time when you want to leave but you can’t. It’s also about moving on.”

Just two weeks before the breakup earlier this month, Miley faced heavy criticism for her highly controversial MTV VMA’s performance with Robin Thicke, which saw her twerking in a nude bikini.

But the 20-year-old doesn’t care what the critics think. In fact, she says the performance was far raunchier than what was shown on TV.

“I was trying to slap Robin’s ass but no one saw it! Believe me!” Miley admitted. “MTV edited so much. They cut almost everything I did. I’m proud of that performance.”

Miley was trying to shake things up as she believes music has become boring. She felt no one was trying to give a good performance and wanted to be unique. The star is adamant those who didn’t like her routine didn’t understand her vision.

“I feel like music is really stale right now. I could have guessed what a lot of artists would have done that night,” Miley says.

“The reaction to what I did has been insane. I think it was a breath of fresh air! For the people that don’t get it, you weren’t meant to.”
