CNN’S publicists need a time-out in our Liars’ Corner for their prevarications regarding Larry King. Last September, when we reported that King would step down this year and CNN was already looking for a replacement, they denied it and declared in a wildly over-optimistic statement: “Larry is at the top of his game.” In early June, CNN said we were “absolutely wrong” when we reported the network was actively looking at other options for King’s 9 p.m. slot. And a day later, when we exclusively reported that British journalist Piers Morgan was being courted to take King’s crown, CNN misleadingly said: “Larry has been part of CNN’s past and will be part of CNN’s future.” They took a similar approach with Campbell Brown. When we asked if she was leaving her 8 p.m. slot, the CNN flack denied it with, “Campbell has a year left on a contract.” She stepped down a few days later.
