Chevy says leaving angry voicemail for ‘Community’ creator was ‘the right thing to do’

Days after an angry voicemail allegedly from Chevy Chase to “Community” creator Dan Harmon was made public, illustrating a feud behind the scenes of the NBC show, Chevy Chase has said leaving the message was “the right thing to do…at the time.”

Chase spoke to TMZ about the fight with Harmon as he was leaving the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood last night.

When TMZ first mentioned Harmon’s name, Chase quipped, “Who’s that?”

He later added, “I don’t know who you’re talking about … I really don’t.”

When Chase did address the voicemail he said, “I think that was the wrong thing to say at the time…No, it was the right thing to say…at the time.”

He then added that the situation had “been handled,” and said, “I don’t have anything to say about this stuff…we got comedy to make.”

Yesterday, Harmon issued an apology to fans of the show for leaking the message.

In the scathing voicemail, posted on Deadline, Chase can be heard calling Harmon an “abomination,” among other things.

Harmon now has a case of the guilts for the message, judging by his note.

“I try to make for the good of the show, and the show is not an expression of my ego or entitlement, it’s an expression of my desire to make strangers happy. When that’s not happening, when I’ve done something that hurts an audience, it’s always an accident. So I have to just acknowledge my mistake and apologize for it to the fans,” Harmon wrote in a Tumblr post.

He continued, “I made the horrible, childish, self-obsessed, unaware, naive and unprofessional decision to play someone’s voicemail to me. He didn’t intend for 150 people to listen and giggle at it, and I didn’t intend for millions of people to read angry reports about it.”

Harmon added, “I was doing what I always do, and always get in trouble for doing, and always pay a steep price for doing. I was thinking about myself and I was thinking about making people laugh. I was airing my dirty laundry for a chuckle.”
