Karl Lagerfeld is paying his penance in Chanel handbags for having called Adele “a little too fat” in February.

“He told his team to send Adele the best the fashion house has to offer after hearing she collected bags,” a source tells The Sun. “He said he really wanted to make it up to her so they could maybe work together in the future.”

Chanel Creative Director Lagerfeld insulted the singer over her weight while guest-editing the newspaper Metro in Paris.

“The thing at the moment is Adele,” Lagerfeld said, when asked about what music he was listening to. “She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.”

When a backlash quickly erupted online, the fashion icon, who lost over 92lbs in 2001, quickly issued a public apology.

“I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean you to you in regards to your appearance,” explained Lagerfeld. “Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.”

Now a source tells The Sun that Lagerfeld really put his foot in his mouth, as he had hoped to ask the six time Grammy winner to model for him.

“He could see her fronting a campaign for Chanel Mademoiselle bags when the contract with Blake Lively ends,” the source says. “He’s annoyed with himself because he ended up insulting her when he meant to compliment her. He thinks she’s beautiful and calls her divine.”

As Adele reveals that she is slowly but surely starting work on new material, speculation continues about the identity of the ex-boyfriend who inspired her chart-topping album “21.” While the Post reported in February that the ex in question is wild-haired musician and actor Slinky Sunbeam, Heat magazine now believes that the “Someone Like You” was celebrity photographer Alex Sturrock.

Sources tell the magazine that Adele dated the photographer from the summer of 2008 to the spring of 2009, and that she even named him the official photographer of her 2009 US tour so that they could travel together.

“It was an intense period for them,” a source claims. “He’s a very normal guy and they’d laugh a lot together, eat junk food and ignore the fact that her career was about to go stratospheric. Adele relied on him a lot, he was her best mate as well as her boyfriend.”

Adele is currently dating Simon Konecki.
