Channing Tatum apparently has very sexy ancestry.

The “Magic Mike” actor, who was just crowned People mag’s “Sexiest Man Alive” of 2012, has deep family roots in the United States, the folks at Ancestry.com have discovered.

The genealogy site dug up a photo of Tatum’s third great-grandfather, a soldier named John A. Ross, looking dapper in his confederate uniform.

Tatum can perhaps thank his good looks to his great-great-great grandpa, but it’s certainly been a banner year for the 32-year-old star. Along with baring his sculpted body in “Magic Mike,” Tatum made audiences swoon with “The Vow” and topped box offices with the movie version of the ‘80s TV show “21 Jump Street.”

The 32-year-old actor says his first thought on hearing the news was: “‘Y’all are messing with me.'”

Other actors who have received the “sexiest” label include George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and Ryan Reynolds. Last year’s “sexiest man” was Bradley Cooper.

People announced its 2012 list Wednesday.
