Helen Gurley Brown’s penchant for wearing just one earring at a time often left her dinner guests on their hands and knees. “How much fun it was to have to climb under the table at every four-star restaurant in New York in search of an errant earring,” said Hearst CEO Frank Bennack Jr. at a memorial service Thursday afternoon for the legendary Cosmopolitan editor, who died in August at age 90. “Somehow, Helen couldn’t stand to have both earrings on at once and would rest one on the table — only to have it come alive and jump to the floor. Can you see me on all fours under the table at La Caravelle?” Pink champagne, cosmopolitans, warm cookies and pink M&Ms were served at Alice Tully Hall to guests including Mayor Bloomberg, William R. Hearst III, new Cosmo Editor in Chief Joanna Coles, Brooke Shields and Barbara Walters, who remembered Brown declining a limo from Hearst on her 25th anniversary to bring her to and from work. Helen told Hearst’s top brass: “Thanks, but I can ride the subway. I’d rather have the cash.”
