An East Hampton gallery that’s no stranger to controversy has again upset some less-than-open-minded locals. An exhibition called “Peep Show” by Jessica Lichtenstein at Vered Gallery includes colorful tableaus of cartoon-like naked women frolicking. “It’s like a Disney World for women,” explains gallerist Ruth Vered. “Yes, it’s naked women — but they are swimming, enjoying, playing. They are like beautiful fruit that is ripe! [The art] gives women freedom.” A passerby with her teen son didn’t agree and told Vered and her partner Janet Lehr she’d call the cops. “She said we should take the paintings out of the window and she’d call the police,” Vered said, adding: “That’ll be the next step. The town will have a censorship committee for the arts.” Over Memorial Day weekend in 2008, Vered was hauled off in handcuffs for serving wine at an opening for photographer Steven Klein, and she and Lehr have been in a dispute with Sag Harbor’s zoning board over the 16-foot “Legs” sculpture on their property by the late Larry Rivers. “This is a small, for-profit gallery,” Vered said. “We’re constantly being harassed. They should lay off.” No cops have yet shown up.
