Frank Stella starts art beef at Christie’s

Frank Stella started an old-school art beef at Christie’s during a recent event honoring fellow painter Ellsworth Kelly, who turned 90 in May. At a panel discussion, Stella admitted his least favorite artist was Salvador Dali. “It doesn’t get more trashy,” Stella sniffed of the surrealist. At the event hosted by the Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies, Stella also lamented that he once could have bought a Kelly work, which now sell for millions, for a steal. “In 1959, I could have bought one of his pieces for $50 [at his studio],” recalled Stella. “But he said, ‘Why do you want to buy that? The paint’s still wet.’ ” Still-sharp Kelly quipped, “I should have let him have it.”
