Brad Pitt: ‘I was smoking way too much dope’

Brad Pitt reveals that he once battled depression and had a hard time doing anything besides sitting on his couch and smoking marijuana.

“I got really sick of myself at the end of the 1990s,” he tells the Hollywood Reporter. “I was hiding out from the celebrity thing, I was smoking way too much dope, I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut and I really got irritated with myself.”

The magazine’s editor, Stephen Galloway, gave the Daily Mail a preview of the interview.

“It’s like he had a semester of depression,” Galloway reveals. “[Pitt] hasn’t had that in this decade, but he definitely wrestled with it in the past.”

While Pitt says that he felt like the ultimate loser back then — which would have coincided with the time he courted and married actress Jennifer Aniston — Pitt now appears to be the ultimate winner. Two of his films are nominated for Best Picture Oscars this year — “Moneyball” and “The Tree of Life.” In addition, Pitt is also nominated for Best Actor for “Moneyball.”

Fellow nominee George Clooney can certainly sympathize with Pitt on having gone through a period of depression. Clooney recently revealed his battle with hopeless feelings after being injured while making “Syriana.” Clooney told Rolling Stone in November that he considered suicide.

Yesterday, after hearing the Oscar nomination, Pitt said he was glad that Clooney was in the Best Actor race with him.

“It’s more fun to have a friend there. No one does it better than George,” Pitt said. “I say give him all the trophies, and when you run out of trophies, make some new ones and give him those, too.”
