Beyoncé says that she owes a lot to singer and songwriter Etta James, who died today at age 73. The new mom proclaims that she learned “so much about myself” from James, and that the legendary singer “inspired me to be a stronger artist.”

LEGENDARY SINGER ETTA JAMES DEAD AT 73

“This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time,” Beyoncé wrote. “I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime.”

Beyoncé says that playing the “At Last” singer onscreen was one of her most enriching experiences.

“Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist,” Beyoncé said. “When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed.”

James lost her battle with leukemia and dementia today, while surrounded by friends and family at Riverside Community Hospital in California. And Beyoncé was hardly the only star to mourn her passing.

Upon hearing the news, Mariah Carey tweeted, “Rest in peace to one of the world’s most influential singers Etta James, you will be missed.”

Will.i.am added, “Showing respect appreciation and love for all the wonderful music and joy #ettajames brought to the world…#ettajamesforever.”

Rihanna offered, “#DearEtta may you rest in peace.”

And Pink opined, “RIP to the late and great Etta James. Your voice and your fight inspired me and many. I love that through recordings, people can live forever.”
