Hotelier Andre Balazs had a good reason for losing out on buying the troubled Chelsea Hotel on West 23rd Street. “Honestly, I didn’t want to be the a – – hole who evicted everybody,” Balazs told Du Jour magazine in an interview. After several investors, including Balazs and Ian Schrager, wanted to buy the property, it was sold in 2011 to Joseph Chetrit for $80 million. Balazs denied he lost the hotel — once home to music legends Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan and Sid Vicious — in a bidding war. After the Chelsea changed hands, tenants claimed they were being driven out because the new owners allowed dilapidated conditions to make it unlivable. They won a court agreement requiring repairs.
