Celebrities warmly welcome Blue Ivy Carter

As news hit that Beyoncé and Jay-Z have welcomed their first child, Blue Ivy Carter, on Saturday night, many celebrities took to Twitter to share their congratulations.

Solange Knowles, Beyoncé ‘s younger sister, was one of the first. “The most beautiful girl in the world,” tweeted Knowles, who was spotted at Lenox Hill Hospital carrying flowers and pink balloons.

Gwyneth Paltrow, who has often double-dated with husband Chris Martin and the new, proud parents, followed soon after. “Welcome to the world Blue!” she wrote. “We love you already.”

After some initial reports stated that the baby’s name was “Ivy Blue Carter,” Paltrow took to Twitter again to voice her confusion. “Is it ivy blue, or blue ivy? so confused,” wrote Paltrow. But she soon confirmed, “It’s Blue Ivy Carter.”

Knowles also referred to her niece’s name confusion via Twitter. “Information that goes through the telephone always gets delivered wrong,” she wrote.

“Congrats to my good friends Beyoncé and Jay-Z,” tweeted hip hop mogul Russell Simmons. He also retweeted a report about the possible meaning of the name Blue Ivy, which posited that the first name references Beyoncé ‘s favorite color as well as Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint” and “The Blueprint2” albums.

The middle name Ivy is thought to be an adaptation of the Roman numeral IV, a stand-in for the number four. Beyoncé told Billboard magazine in May, “We all have special numbers in our lives, and 4 is that for me. It’s the day I was born. My mother’s birthday, and a lot of my friends’ birthdays, are on the fourth; April 4 is my wedding date.”

Model Brooklyn Decker was holding out hope that Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s baby would share her name.

“Oh my gosh Bey had her baby… I hope I hope I hope she is named Brooklyn.. I will tattoo it on my butt if so,” Decker tweeted. She later added, “Ivy Blue Carter. They named her Ivy Blue Carter.. we can no longer be bonded. I’ll go cry myself to sleep now.”

Rihanna, a protege of Jay-Z’s, also took to Twitter to congratulate the couple. “Welcome to the world princess Carter! Love Aunty Rih,” the “You Da One” star wrote.

Hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs added, “Congrats to jay and B! God Bless 🙂 ! And many more!”

When Beyoncé revealed her baby bump at the MTV Video Music Awards back on Aug. 28, it was the most tweeted event of 2011, garnering 8.868 tweets per second. And, at just 36-hours-old, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s baby already had its own Twitter account set up, using the handle “@BlueIvyCarter,” though it appears to have been created by a prankster.
