WASILLA, Alaska — Levi Johnston owes nearly $40,000 in unpaid child support to former fiancee Bristol Palin, her attorney revealed Saturday.

Johnston, who fathered son Tripp with the former Republican vice presidential candidate’s daughter Bristol before they split up, apparently had not made a child support payment since June 2010, TMZ reported.

According to court records, the 21-year-old is required to pay $1,750 a month and owes payment for the last 22 months.

The attorney told the website, “We forbore pursuing child support collection in the (perhaps naive) hope that Mr. Johnston would do what men are supposed to do and pay his support obligation voluntarily.”

He added, “We were also concerned that garnishment or other aggressive collection efforts could exacerbate an already strained relationship.”

Johnston confirmed Wednesday he is expecting his second child with Sunny Oglesby, a 20-year-old school teacher from Wasilla, Alaska.

He claimed in the past that Sarah Palin and her husband Todd alienated him from his son Tripp and that he barely sees him — allegations the couple denied recently.
