CEO Howard Lutnick said to be mulling mayoral run

There is at least one Republican who is thrilled with the progressive agenda of Mayor Bill de Blasio — Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick.

“Lutnick is a self-made man and he wants to run for mayor, and he is delighted that de Blasio is so far to the left because it will make his prospects that much better four years from now,” a source told me.

Lutnick made $9 million last year running Cantor Fitzgerald, the leading trader of government bonds with 1,600 employees in more than 30 cities around the world.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Cantor Fitzgerald lost 658 employees in the World Trade Center attacks, including Lutnick’s brother. Howard himself would have perished if he hadn’t taken his son to school that morning.

But a spokeswoman told me, “It’s too soon. Howard, if he runs, will likely not run for eight years. As for de Blasio, Howard would never speak negatively of him. That would be disrespectful and not Howard’s style.”
