Stephen Sondheim talks ‘Glee’

Stephen Sondheim was in typically chatty and catty form during a discussion about his life. Asked whether he objected to his lyrics to “Rose’s Turn,” originally performed by Ethel Merman in “Gypsy,” being sung on Fox’s “Glee” by gay character Kurt Hummel, with the words changed to suit the plotline, he responded, “I’ve seen it sung completely out of context in productions of ‘Gypsy!’ ” Post theater critic Frank Scheck also reports that Sondheim, 80, lamented the current state of the theater, saying, “You look at Broadway audiences these days, and the average age makes me look like a young man.”
