Melissa Berkelhammer recovers after friends feared suicide following Facebook post

Jealousy nearly forced socialite Melissa Berkelhammer over the edge last week. A nasty tweet from an anonymous account questioning if Berkelhammer, 33, was well known enough to attend the Google Fashion event in SoHo got under her skin. Berkelhammer, a Huffington Post blogger who was educated at Princeton and Harvard, responded in a Facebook status post: “I can’t live in a world that is totally against, and I have all of you to thank. Goodbye. Thanks for treating me like [bleep] me [sic] whole life. Hope you can live with yourself.” Her friends, worried that she was suicidal, rushed to rescue Berkelhammer, who’s grieving over her psychiatrist father’s recent death from cancer. But she says she’s now feeling stronger. “I took it too seriously,” Berkelhammer told Page Six. “I’ve been trying to get over my father’s death . . . I was just feeling really sad and sorry for myself.” She added, “I learned my lesson, you don’t say things on a public thing like Facebook.” Paper magazine writer Peter Davis told us, “I have always found [Berkelhammer] to be a nice, polite, smart and never snobby girl that so-called socialites pick on for no reason. The party scene in New York is like high school, and Melissa does not deserve to be bullied.”
