Lena Dunham gave a winsome speech during a scenester-filled fund-raising event for Manhattan Borough President and comptroller candidate Scott Stringer at the Maritime Hotel, despite the fact she can’t vote in the primary. According to the New York State Board of Elections, the “Girls” creator is not enrolled in a political party. Still, she said, “Just because it’s New York City doesn’t mean it’s going to be okay for us forever. There’s some like weird red-state stuff creeping in here and we know that.” She also said of her generation of artists being priced out of town, “We can’t have our next-generation Patti Smith moving to Tampa.” She cited Stringer’s accomplishments, including an anti-stalking law, which she said “has been great for me because I just can’t get rid of them ho’s.” Many were drawn to the event by Stringer spokesperson Audrey Gelman, including her photographer boyfriend Terry Richardson, Prabal Gurung, Mickey Sumner, Stacey Bendet and The Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine.
