Haiti helpers roil neighbors

With Fashion Week kicking off tomorrow, designers including Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera and Tory Burch found themselves under a different kind of tent at a Haiti fund-raiser on Monday night. They joined Anna Wintour, Whoopi Goldberg and Gayle King in raising more than $1 million at Karan’s Urban Zen Studios. The event, which featured performances by Mary J. Blige and Wyclef Jean, was to help buy tents and medical equipment. But despite the worthy cause, some of Karan’s West Village neighbors were upset that Greenwich Street was partially closed. One spy said, “When a 30-year resident complained to Karan’s rent-a-cops, he was called a ‘cockroach’ and other unpleasant names.” Many of the designers then headed to the after-party at the Standard Hotel to join Jay-Z, Michael Stipe, Tinsley Mortimer, Patti Smith and Rachel Zoe.
