Heidi Klum ‘surprised no one would help us’ during riptide rescue

Heidi Klum saved her son and nannies from the Hawaiian riptide that nearly carried them away — but she still could have used help from others on the beach. “The family was surprised that we were being photographed and no one would come help us,” Klum told People magazine. Still, Klum tried to downplay the threat her family faced during Sunday’s scary incident on the north shore of Oahu. Klum’s 7-year-old son Henry and his two nannies got caught in the huge wave. Klum rescued her kid and one nanny from the dangerous waters, while her boyfriend and bodyguard Martin Kirsten nabbed the other. “Henry swam out of it. I grabbed him at the shore,” Klum told the magazine. “The nannies were the ones in much deeper trouble.” Klum’s advice to other vacationers was to, “Never underestimate the power of the ocean.” For the 39-year-old “Project Runway” star, playing the role of a brave lifeguard was unusual. “People are used to seeing me on the beach in a bikini, smiling with the wind in my hair,” she said.
