AT&T is getting static over a new TV commercial that blatantly borrowed from the work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the artists behind “The Gates” 2005 installation in Central Park. “Shocking is the first word that comes to mind,” one blog scoffed. In the spot, called “Rethink Possible,” workers are seen draping orange swatches of fabric over monuments and buildings throughout America. Christo and his late wife wrapped the Pont Neuf in Paris in 1984 and the Reichstag in Berlin in 1995. We hear Christo had his lawyer complain to AT&T. Last week, a disclaimer was added to the end of the commercial stating, “The artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude have no direct or indirect affiliation or involvement with AT&T.” Christo declined to comment. A spokesman for AT&T said, “Neither Christo nor Jean-Claude nor any business entity of [theirs] has been or will be paid any compensation of any kind.”
