“Les Misérables” star Anne Hathaway set her sights on a different musical, “Cabaret,” when she wowed the audience at a show at Joe’s Pub Wednesday night. “Anne vamped like Audrey Hepburn and sounded like Liza Minnelli,” said a spy, adding she “dressed as Sally Bowles in tiny black satin shorts, black undershirt, a bow tie and boots, with dark, cropped hair and green nail polish.” In the audience were “Silver Linings Playbook” producer Harvey Weinstein, “Lincoln” screenwriter Tony Kushner, choreographer Kathleen Marshall and 85-year-old “Cabaret” composer John Kander. Hathaway was joined on stage by “Les Miz” co-star Eddie Redmayne, Audra McDonald, Linda Lavin and Raul Esparza. A second show was added after the first sold out. At an after-party at the Public Theater’s new restaurant-lounge The Library, a birthday cake was brought out to surprise Esparza, and the golden-piped guests sang “Happy Birthday.” Hathaway’s mom, Kate, recalled playing Fantine in the first national tour of “Les Misérables” (the same role her daughter plays in the film with Hugh Jackman). We hear director Tom Hooper’s heading to New York with prints of the upcoming movie to privately screen it for the first time the day after Thanksgiving.
