Knish lovers are still crying weeks after a fire at the Gabila factory on Long Island interrupted production of the delectable fried potato pockets citywide.
Gabila issued a statement in September stating that “due to a small contained fire in our factory, we are unable to produce any square knishes until approximately the end of November.”
The company has supplied well over 1 billion of the carb-delivery systems. That means area delis are still reeling and knish connoisseurs have been left hungry. A desperate power-publicist moaned to us last week: “One of the kids from my office just went to Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop around here, and he said that every deli in the city is knish-less!”
Gabila produces the classic “Original Coney Island Square Knish,” while spots like Yonah Schimmel’s Knish Bakery on the Lower East Side are known for their round, baked versions. During the knish krisis, delis including Katz’s are still stocking the baked, round kind — but fried-knish addicts are losing it at the same time the FDA focuses on trans fats.
