Randy Travis pleads guilty to DUI, could avoid jail

Randy Travis could be getting off easy for his drunk, naked arrest last summer.

The country singer pleaded guilty to his Aug. 2012 DWI yesterday, in a case that began last summer when the country music star was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.

According to Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown, Travis was sentenced to two years on probation and a $2,000 fine. If he fails to complete his probation, he’ll be forced to serve 180 days behind bars.

This means all Travis needs to do is stay away from trouble for two years so he doesn’t end up behind bars, reports TMZ. If he breaks any laws though, officials could send the Grammy winner to jail.

To avoid the slammer, Travis has to complete 100 hours of community service, spend a minimum of 30 days in an alcohol treatment facility and have an ignition interlock device present on any car he drives. The device prevents the car from starting if he is intoxicated.

The 53-year-old entered the plea in a court in the North Texas city of Sherman. The misdemeanor was punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

As the singer walked out of the Grayson County Courthouse, he thanked the court and his supporters. He also acknowledged two patrolmen for “obviously taking care of me that night.”

“I’m glad it’s behind me,” he said of the case.

Back in August, the star was hit with DWI charges after a Texas state trooper found him lying naked in a road.

Prosecutors said Travis was found lying in the roadway naked and was belligerent at the scene and while being transported to a hospital. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.21. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.

The country star, whose hits include “Forever and Ever, Amen,” walked out of jail the next morning wearing scrubs, no shoes and a baseball cap.

Travis also had faced a charge of retaliation for allegedly threatening officers, but as part of the plea agreement he will no longer face that charge.

Later that month, an “extremely intoxicated” Travis (fully clothed this time) was reportedly hospitalized after a boozy brawl in a Plano, Tex. church parking lot, Plano police said. Travis was cited for simple assault.

Travis also was arrested last February in Denton County, northwest of Dallas, for public intoxication after police spotted a vehicle parked in front of a church and found an open bottle of wine and Travis smelling of alcohol. That case is no longer on file with the county court and appears to have been dismissed.
