NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was surrounded by an “iron fence” of security at the Super Bowl — as well as by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Attorney General Eric Holder in his box for Sunday’s game. We’re told Goodell — who was already tightly guarded after alleged threats from unhappy New Orleans Saints fans who believe he ruined the Saints’ season with his yearlong suspension of coach Sean Payton over the team’s bounty program — was feeling even safer thanks to his powerful guests, who were accompanied by their own security plus a fleet of Secret Service agents. Also there in the commissioner’s box were uber-agent Mike Ovitz, 9-year-old football sensation Samantha Gordon, Jack and Jackie Harbaugh, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer and LSU coach Les Miles. But when the lights went out, a source tells us, “Everyone remained calm, but a discussion started about the possible cause. [Outgoing head of the Pentagon] Panetta mused about a cyber attack, but quickly ruled it out. Meanwhile, Gov. Christie said, ‘I hope this doesn’t happen in New Jersey.’ ” MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford will be the site of next year’s Super Bowl. Reps for Goodell and Christie didn’t get back to us.
