Tom’s big birthday surprise

Katie Holmes threw a surprise birthday dinner party for hubby Tom Cruise at the members-only Soho Beach House in Miami last night.

The super-secret, intimate gathering for 40 included an Italian dinner, dancing to Cuban music and a large chocolate cake for Cruise, who turns 49 today.

Cruise has been filming the screen adaptation of the Broadway hit “Rock of Ages” with Russell Brand, Julianne Hough and Alec Baldwin for several weeks in Florida, where photos show that Cruise has gained some impressive muscle mass to play the role of tattooed rocker Stacee Jaxx.

Holmes, who appears in the upcoming horror flick “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” has been traveling regularly from Los Angeles to visit Cruise with their daughter, Suri, on the Miami set. According to sources, Holmes last week reserved a handful of rooms at the Soho Beach House for the festivities. But sources said several of Cruise’s close friends, including “Rock of Ages” director Adam Shankman and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, weren’t able to make it.

Ironically, Lopez used Holmes as cover when Jennifer was planning Anthony’s surprise 40th birthday party in 2008 at the Bowery Hotel.

Lopez had told Anthony they were going to have dinner to celebrate Holmes’ role in Broadway’s “All My Sons.” Then Anthony was greeted with a 1940s Cuban nightclub-themed party at the hotel with Dita Von Teese and a salsa orchestra.

Cruise has been social in Miami while making “Rock of Ages.” Sources told us he partied with the movie’s cast members, Malin Akerman, Brand and others last weekend at an a ultra-private dinner party for 40 friends hosted by Gloria and Emilio Estefan at the couple’s Star Island home.

Representatives for Soho House, Cruise and Holmes had no comment.
