Man who lived the tale on hand for ‘Monuments Men’ premiere

There were monumental men at the premiere of “The Monuments Men” at the Ziegfield on Tuesday night — starting with Harry Ettlinger.

Ettlinger, 88, is the last surviving member of the six US soldiers who were sent to Europe at the end of World War II to recover art masterpieces looted by the Nazis.

A Jew who fled Germany in the ’30s, Ettlinger shook hands and posed for photos with several West Point cadets at the screening of the movie, which stars George Clooney, Matt Damon and Bill Murray.

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton and his wife, Rikki Klieman, chatted with Rudy and Judith Giuliani. The two men reminisced about the last time they were at the Ziegfield together, at the 1994 premiere of “The Paper,” the Ron Howard movie starring Michael Keaton and Glenn Close.

“We got called away because a cop was shot in The Bronx,” Bratton told me.

At the after-party co-sponsored by Larry Gagosian at the Metropolitan Club, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters said he had just met the two Russian women in Pussy Riot and was impressed.

Also on hand: Woody Johnson, Eric Schmidt, 20th Century Fox chief Jim Gianopulos and “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuarón.
