Jonah Hill circling ‘Bright Lights’ role

Fresh off of Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Jonah Hill could be moving on to another tale of Big Apple excess. Sources say he’ll star as Tad Allagash in a big-screen remake of Jay McInerney’s seminal 1984 novel “Bright Lights, Big City.” (The Yuppie role was played by Kiefer Sutherland in a 1988 film adaptation co-starring Michael J. Fox.) This time, the project’s being written and directed by “Gossip Girl” and “The O.C.” creator Josh Schwartz, who’s been trying to make the movie since 2009. But McInerney recently said he isn’t so sure Hill’s right for the role. “The character is the ultimate cool friend,” the author said at the Gold Coast International Film Festival last fall. “Jonah wants to play that character. Obviously it would be a very different type. I’m willing to consider anything.” He’d added that Schwartz updated his work for the Internet age. “The only change he felt he had to make was that the protagonist now works at a Web site instead of The New Yorker . . . He writes a blog,” McInerney said. Schwartz’s rep denied Hill’s involvement. Hill’s rep didn’t return calls.
