Brian Stokes Mitchell was midconcert at Town Hall, singing a very quiet and inspired rendition of “America the Beautiful,” when a cellphone went off in the audience. After the third ring, according to author Bruce Littlefield, Mitchell paused and said, “If that’s Obama, tell him I’m singing right now.” He sang a few more lines before adding, “Tell him I’ll call him back later.” It got a tremendous laugh and a round of applause.
