Gerard Butler spoke of the tragic helicopter crash in his hometown of Glasgow, but said of the rescue effort, “It made me proud to be Scottish.”
Nine were killed and 32 injured on Friday night when a police helicopter crashed into the pub Clutha, which was packed with about 120 people listening to live music. Rescuers went into the unstable building for those trapped in the rubble.
The “300” star, whose mom, Margaret, lives outside Glasgow, told Page Six, “I was talking to my mum about it today. It was heartbreaking, anything from my home city touches me . . . I hate hearing about the tragedy, but at the same time it makes me proud to be Scottish and especially to be from Glasgow, because, my mother was saying how proud she was of all the people who had gone back in (the roof had just collapsed) to help people out.”
Butler hosted the lavish Roger Dubuis and Dom Perignon dinner Wednesday in Miami Beach, but he said he could not attend any other events around Art Basel as he is planning a charity trip. “It’s been a busy time for me. I am going to Liberia with an organization called Mary’s Meals [which sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities]. We are making a documentary, as we [visit] the schools.”
In a movie star moment, Butler was escorted into the soiree by Challenger, a huge, tame bald eagle who lives at Dolly Parton’s Dollywood, and was there as the symbol of watchmaker Dubuis’ Excalibur collection.
Butler got the party going by getting into the DJ booth with DJ Ms. Nix and mingled with fellow guests including Eva Longoria, Karolina Kurkova and her husband Archie Drury, Serena Williams and Jonathan Cheban and effortlessly charmed every woman in the venue.
