Feminist pioneer Gloria Steinem was depicted in the first cut of “Lovelace,” but her scenes ended up on the cutting-room floor. The movie was set to show Steinem (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) helping porn star Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried) deal with the aftermath of “Deep Throat,” having decided that Lovelace had been forced into the industry by her abusive husband, Chuck Traynor. Both women declined to discuss their disappointment, reports The Post’s Richard Johnson. Steinem was said to be busy finishing her memoir and Parker traveling abroad. But Steinem recently criticized the film for downplaying the horrors Lovelace endured. “In real life, it was much more violent. I don’t think people could have watched,” she told reporters at a New York screening. Traynor had Lovelace gang-raped, Steinem said. “She was terrified of him. I’m not sure anybody would have been able to sit in a theater and watch what really happened. I think [the filmmakers] did the best they could.” A publicist for the movie told Page Six: “The decision [to cut the Steinem scene] was made from a narrative and character standpoint during the edit. We decided to conclude the film at 1980, after Chuck Traynor’s exit and a family resolution for Linda, with a hint of what was to come in her next chapter.” Parker’s performance was said to be brilliant.
