Is the Vatican broke? Edward Jay Epstein, an expert on assassinations, cartels and the CIA, says this is the problem facing Pope Francis. “The Vatican is desperately short of money, and had been for more than a century,” Epstein blogged. “It was so impoverished after the First World War . . . it borrowed $100,000 . . . to pay for the funeral of Pope Benedict XV. It had priceless art and church properties, but it could not sell them, nor did Dioceses abroad provide funds. All it has is the meager revenue from . . . postage stamps and . . . collection boxes in churches.” But the Catholic League’s Bill Donohue told The Post’s Richard Johnson: “Epstein’s piece smacks of a conspiratorial mind-set . . . It’s not worth commenting on beyond this.”
