It feels like everyone in Hollywood knows each other. But there are still some celebrity relationships that come as a surprise.

Colin Farrell opened up to Ellen Degeneres Monday about his close friendship with Elizabeth Taylor near the end of her life, revealing it was the “the last romantic relationship” he had.

The two celebrities met each other in 2009, when the 37-year-old’s youngest child, Henry Tadeusz Farrell, was born at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. Taylor was there receiving treatment.

Farrell ran into Taylor’s manager at the hospital, and extended his well-wishes to the ailing Hollywood icon. With the actress still on his mind, the actor reached out to her through his publicist, only to find that she had done the same. Shortly after, the two met in person for the first time.

“And that was the beginning of a year and a half or two years of what was a really cool (relationship),” Farrell told Degeneres. “It was kind of like the last — it feels like in my head, not hers, I’m projecting — but the last kind of romantic relationship I had. Which was never consummated.”

The two stars continued to grow close for the rest of Taylor’s life and traded several late-night phone calls.

“I’d call her at two in the morning, and the nurse would answer the phone, and I’d say, ‘Is she awake?’…And then I’d be on the phone and I’d hear, ‘Hello?’ And I’d go, ‘How’s it going?’ And we’d talk for a half an hour, an hour, into the wee hours.”

“It was really cool. I just adored her,” the actor continued. “She was a spectacular, spectacular woman. I wanted to be (husband) number eight, but we ran out of road.”
