‘Pippa’ scribe’s star inspiration

The grumpy older husband played by Alan Arkin in “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” was loosely based on director Rebecca Miller‘s legendary playwright father, Arthur Miller, her actor-husband Daniel Day-Lewis revealed. He told us, “There’s definitely a bit of her father in the Alan Arkin character.” He plays Herb Lee, a likable but acerbic publisher who’s had three heart attacks and three wives. Miller was married to childhood sweetheart Mary Slattery, Marilyn Monroe and Inge Morath.
