Ex-ABC boss David Westin was ‘tired of firing’

David Westin‘s buddies President Obama and US Attorney General Eric Holder called yesterday to wish him well in his post-ABC life. The ABC News president announced his resignation on Monday, a week after telling staff he’d be taking on more responsibility. “I think he just got tired of firing people,” said one source. Westin had overseen 400 layoffs. Plenty of names were being mentioned yesterday as his potential replacement, but insiders say a woman will get the job as the first female news division president. “It makes them look coordinated and progressive, especially since that person is going to be cutting back even more,” said another source. Head of ABC newsgathering Kate O’Brian is said to have made a play to Anne Sweeney, president of the ABC/Disney TV group. An insider said Rebecca Campbell, president of ABC-owned Television Stations Group, is also in the mix. ABC already put Christiane Amanpour in the anchor seat for “This Week” and elevated Diane Sawyer to “World News.”
