Stephanie Winston Wolkoff wasn’t always a Winston

The New York Times should have checked the clips before profiling Stephanie Winston Wolkoff “of the jewelry Winstons” last week. Page Six reported last year that Wolkoff is not a granddaughter of Harry Winston. Stephanie was adopted by Harry’s son, Bruce Winston, after her mother married Bruce. But the Times reported Tuesday that Stephanie — who worked for Vogue before becoming fashion director for Lincoln Center — grew up “as a jewelry heiress on a 13-acre estate.” Jay Lewin, the personal lawyer for Bruce’s brother, Ronald, told us, “She’s a Batinkoff — not a Winston. Stephanie is a Batinkoff of the successful Catskills chicken-farming family. She did not grow up on the Winston estate in Scarsdale.” There seems to be some resentment that Stephanie, a 6-foot-1 mother of three with a karate black belt, is an heiress to the Harry Winston Trust. Lewin said, “This is a classic case of social climbing and grifting.”
