There’s getting into character, and then there’s really getting into character.

Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly cut up his hand after punching a mirror on the set of his new movie, “Nightcrawler,” on Wednesday and had to be taken to the hospital, reports People.

The 32-year-old actor was filming a scene for the movie in which his character looks into a mirror and talks to himself when the incident happened. Gyllenhaal was then taken to the emergency room where he received stitches.

“Jake flipped out,” a source told the magazine. “His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital.”

In the movie, which also stars Renee Russo, Gyllenhaal plays a freelance videographer deep in the Los Angeles crime journalism scene.

Hospitalization or not, Gyllenhaal was back on the Los Angeles film by the end of the day.

“Nightcrawler” is scheduled to be released sometime in 2014.
