Marc Jacobs may take over at Dior

After months of rumors and speculation, it is being reported that American designer Marc Jacobs is in talks to succeed John Galliano at Christian Dior.

Jacobs heads up a short list of designers that includes Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz, Balenciaga’s Nicolas Ghesquière, Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, Haider Ackermann and Hedi Slimane, according to WWD.

Elbaz, Ghesquière and Burton have taken themselves out of the running and Ackerman and Slimane did not receive offers, it is being reported. Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisci is said to still be up for the job.

Jacobs legal team is now in Paris attempting to work out a deal with Dior executives while he is in New York working on his spring 2012 collection. The designer and management are said to “excited” about the prospect.

Should Jacobs move to Dior, Phoebe Phillo, the current creative director at Celine, would likely move over to Louis Vuitton and design both collections.

Galliano was ousted from his post at the fashion giant after being caught on camera delivering an anti-Semitic rant earlier this year. He stood trial in June and a ruling in his case will be handed down Sept. 8.
