80s club Area gets 2nd life and a glamorous crowd

Legendary Eighties New York nightclub Area – the haunt of stars including Andy Warhol, Grace Jones, Bianca Jagger and Sting – got a second life on the Lower East Side last night thanks to the co-owner Eric Goode.

Goode and his sister Jennifer Goode celebrated the release of their book “Area: 1983-1987” at the Hole Gallery with an exhibition curated by Jeffrey Deitch featuring work from the club by David Hockney, Keith Haring, Francesco Clemente, Chuck Close, Julian Schnabel and more.

An Warhol favorite, Area blended art and nightlife, changing exhibits every six weeks with themes like “Gnarly,” “Night,” ‘Sex,” and “Suburbia.”

Open from 1983–1987, it was also frequented by the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Brat Packers Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy, as well as creating it’s own stars out of artists and performers like Bernard Zette and Jeffrey Strouth.
