NYPD Commissioner Bratton schools Tom Selleck on cop attire

Don’t look for police commissioner Bill Bratton to break out the all-black uniform he sometimes wore when he was top cop in Los Angeles.

“In New York, the commissioner is a civilian. In L.A., the police chief is a peace officer who reports to a board of commissioners,” telecaster Rikki Klieman told writer Richard Turley at her husband’s swearing-in ceremony.

In fact, Bratton recently ran into Tom Selleck at Elio’s and pointed out to his friend, who plays a New York City police commissioner on CBS’s “Blue Bloods,” that his character’s wearing of a uniform is a procedural and sartorial faux pas.

Selleck laughed, but still wears a uniform on the CBS show.

Bratton broke recent tradition by taking his oath at police headquarters instead of City Hall. Mayor de Blasio honored the department by coming to its home, and even allowed Bratton to walk first in the procession, followed by bagpipers.

The reception by the assembled officers was warm.

Also in the crowd was Tony Danza, who graciously posed for photos with several cops; ex-public advocate Betsy Gotbaum, not wildly enthusiastic about the debut of her successor Letitia James; defense lawyers Barry Scheck and Murray Richman and his daughter Stacey Richman; and statuesque socialite Somers Farkas.
