Tigers stood at the entrance of the Meatpacking District nightclub Provocateur the other night, but they weren’t working as the new sharp-clawed door staff at the notoriously hard-to-get-into venue. The two cute Bengal tiger cubs were there to greet guests at the 42nd birthday bash for real estate mogul Paolo Zampolli. While partygoers including Ana Beatriz Barros, Jeisa Chiminazzo, Russell Simmons, Sean Stone, Sean Avery and a slew of UN ambassadors were not allowed to hold the endangered creatures, they were permitted to pose for photos and pet the cubs in the arms of their handlers, as cleared by Department of Health rules. Some guests even offered to pay to take the cubs home, but the handlers told the well-heeled crew to donate to the Global Tiger Fund instead. Inside the lounge, where models and diplomats mingled, the tigers were later held by the handlers on-stage as violinist Miri Ben-Ari serenaded the crowd after dinner. But the furry guests had to retire before the real cougars came out and DJ Roger Sanchez entertained partygoers in the club area until the early morning.
