Leonardo DiCaprio: ‘Actors are just clowns for hire’

Leonardo DiCaprio says that being an actor is essentially being a “clown for hire.”

The “J. Edgar” star tells The Sun, “I realize that I do not change the course of history. I am an actor, I do a movie, that’s the end of it. You have to realize we are just clowns for hire.”

It’s an interesting statement as “Titanic,” DiCaprio’s breakthrough movie from 1997, is headed back to theaters this spring, 15 years after its initial release. However, DiCaprio tells the newspaper that he had no idea the film would be the kind of phenomenon it was.

“Titanic? I would love to say I predicted it would be one of the biggest hits in film history. I didn’t — and wondered whether I should do it at all,” says DiCaprio, explaining that he was initially more enticed by “Boogie Nights,” which went on to star Mark Wahlberg. “I resisted it for a long time because I had been offered the film ‘Boogie Nights.’ The fact that Kate Winslet said ‘yes’ was the final decider.”

In the interview, DiCaprio also talks about his love life, making a subtle slam on famous exes Gisele Bundchen, Bar Refaeli and Blake Lively.

“My first love? Boy, I don’t even remember. I suppose if I’d found my true love I would be married right now, wouldn’t I?” said DiCaprio. “Pretentious women really turn me off. Vindictive women, too. So do opportunistic women. I think what turns me on about a girl is what most men find attractive — which is something genuine about them. Being a good person.”
