Are maltipoos and morkies related to celebrity pups the new Birkin bags? The limited edition Hermes status symbols famously go for $25,000 and up, but the extra-mini “teacup” dog breeds that are popular with celebrities — a maltipoo is a Maltese and a poodle, while a morkie is a Maltese and a Yorkshire terrier — can fetch anywhere from $3,800 to $65,000 and up. Dogs related to celeb-owned pups also come at a higher premium. Breeder Texas Teacups, in Forney, Texas, says it has sold dogs to stars including Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Kevin Jonas, Ciara and Ashley Tisdale, as well as Jessica Simpson’s family. The breeder’s also known for selling the pricey pooches to athletes, including NFL players A.J. Hawk and Brady Quinn and action hero Sylvester Stallone. When fashion insider Annelise Peterson recently bought her maltipoo puppy Winnie — who’s related to Blake Lively’s dog, Penny — she found herself up against an unnamed NHL player for the pooch. The 5-pound furry friend was then delivered in a pink crate via a Continental flight. “A Birkin may have a handle, but not a Twitter handle,” said Peterson, whose own dog “tweets” as WinnieMaltiPooh. And whereas a crocodile Birkin trumps a mere leather one, “It’s all about having a strawberry blond maltipoo,” says one owner. “You pay more for certain colors because they’re more rare.”
