Disco lives again with a Jan. 19 auction of nightlife legend Steve Rubell’s Studio 54 archive. Palm Beach Modern Auctions will sell off items from the late club owner’s estate that have been stored for the past 28 years in Rubell’s former apartment with Bill Hamilton. Items from the legendary disco’s run include photos of habitues like Halston, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Bianca Jagger, Farrah Fawcett and more. There are also drink tickets, specialized invitations, including one from Fleetwood Mac, Cheryl Tiegs and Peter Beard for a “Save the Elephant Benefit” featuring a photo by Beard estimated to sell for $300 to $600, and the Studio 54 guest book where Rubell would write who was expected that night. One lot, expected to fetch between $4,000 and $6,000, includes a Polaroid of Rubell taken by Andy Warhol for Interview magazine. Another covetable item is a Warhol dollar-sign sculpture, signed and dated by the artist, which is estimated at $30,000 to $50,000. Studio 54 reigned from 1977 until 1981 when it was sold by founders Rubell and Ian Schrager. Bidding will be possible through LiveAuctioneers.com. Sadly, no shirtless bartenders have yet been put up for sale.
