The wife of Eagles co-founder Randy Meisner fatally shot herself in a “freak accident” Sunday night — just after calling police to report a drunken domestic-violence incident at their Los Angeles home, authorities said.
Lana Rae Meisner, 63, was moving a rifle that was stored inside a case in a closet when she lifted the gun and another item within the container shifted and hit the trigger — blasting off a single round into her head, according to police.
Earlier in the evening, at around 5:30, LAPD officers went to the couple’s Studio City home after Lana called 911 to report a “possibly intoxicated male,” authorities said.
The cops took a domestic-violence incident report and left, police said.
Then, fewer than two hours later, at around 7 p.m, Randy, 69, called them back — saying his wife had been shot, police said.
He was unable to say whether she was alive or dead, according to RadarOnline.
Cops said the former Eagles bassist was in another area of the house when the gun went off and that he has been cooperative.
After an investigation by detectives and the LA Coroner’s Office, authorities ruled Lana’s death an accident, saying there was no foul play involved.
“There was an accidental discharge of the firearm. It was completely accidental, there is nothing indicative of a murder, homicide or a suicide,” LAPD Detective Gus Barrientos told The Post.
“It’s a weird accident, that’s all I can say. There was absolutely no struggle, just a freak accident.”
Still, LA Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter told The Post that they have not done an autopsy yet, so the final cause of death is still pending.
“The autopsy is expected to take place within the next couple days,” he said.
Meisner — who left the Eagles in 1977 and is best known for his lead vocals on their 1975 hit “Take It to the Limit” — had reportedly been struggling with a bipolar condition.
In January 2015, his friend, James Newton, was granted temporary conservatorship over him due to his mental instability, Radar reported.
During the court battle, it was revealed that Randy had threatened to kill several staff workers at Encino hospital with an AK-47.
Newton claimed in legal documents that Lana blatantly ignored her husband’s mental-health problems and battles with substance abuse over the years — and that she often kept her husband in a “state of near-constant inebriation” while spending his cash behind his back, according to TMZ.
In spite of this, the couple told the gossip site at the time that they had been “doing great.”
