Glenn Close and her husband of nine years, David Shaw, have quietly divorced, Page Six has exclusively learned.
The actress, who wed venture capitalist Shaw in Maine in 2006, is returning to New York to focus on her enduringly successful acting career. “Glenn and David have been telling friends over the summer they are divorcing, and he’ll remain living in Maine while Glenn moves back to New York full-time,” said a source, who added, “They’ve been separated for some time, and things are amicable between them. The divorce was mutual.”
The actress’ spokeswoman last night confirmed, “They are divorced,” adding that the marriage officially ended this summer.
Close’s February 2006 wedding to Shaw was the third marriage for the 68-year-old star. Close has a daughter, Annie Maude Starke, 27, with her former partner John Starke.
Close — who has an apartment on Central Park West and a home in Westchester — has been philosophical about marriage in the past. She famously told People in the late 1980s about what she learned after her second marriage to James Marlas: “Too many women define themselves in terms of a man . . . In my marriages I was like an amoeba . . . Men blossom under the nurturing of a good woman, while women don’t often get that benefit from a man. I think of men and women as two different species. Katharine Hepburn said they should live next door and visit each other once in a while. Not a bad idea.”
And in 1991, “I don’t particularly think marriage is a natural state. Men and women are so vastly different . . . Why put more pressure on by binding yourself to someone?”
Meanwhile, six-time Oscar nominee Close remains in demand as an actress. She’s reuniting with John Malkovich for the first time since 1988 in “Wilde Wedding,” shooting this month. Her next movie, “She Who Brings Gifts,” is set for a 2016 release, and in April she’ll reprise her role as Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard” onstage in London.
Close is also in talks to join Ed Helms and Owen Wilson in the comedy “Bastards.”
