Former New York Times movie reviewer Elvis Mitchell appears to have money problems — again. The Detroit News reports that the IRS has filed tax liens for more than $500,000 against the dreadlocked critic, who currently hosts “Under the Influence” on Turner Classic Movies. TCM didn’t respond to a request for comment, and Mitchell couldn’t be located. But he was less than forthcoming the last time we talked to him in April 2008, after he was caught at the Canadian border with $12,000 cash and 15 Cuban cigars. Mitchell, who had only declared $80, claimed at the time, “I have a fear of banks, so I keep cash in my house and I grabbed the wrong box . . . Apparently a black man with dreads can’t carry that much cash, but I think there are a few worse things to be embarrassed about.” The movie maven, who was on his way to be a judge at the Toronto Film Festival, ended up forfeiting more than $6,000 as a result of the “mix-up.”
