Anna Wintour‘s father must be spinning in his grave with the news that the once-great Evening Standard in London is soon to become a free paper to boost circulation. It was editor Charles “Chilly Charlie” Wintour who transformed the paper back in the ’60s, bringing pop culture to its pages and hiring great writers and editors. The Vogue editrix’s biographer, Jerry Oppenheimer, tells Page Six, “The Evening Standard was the first paper to write a series on The Beatles, and it was young Anna whom her father consulted about what was ‘the happening thing’ in swinging ’60s London.”
