Vincent Gallo unloads his own image

Artist/actor/director Vincent Gallo is selling a portrait of himself by Julian Schnabel. When Gallo portrayed painter Francesco Clemente in Schnabel’s directorial debut, “Basquiat” (1996), his scene was a re-creation of a dinner at Mr. Chow where Schnabel drew Clemente’s portrait in a guest book facing the page where he drew Schnabel’s portrait. Since Gary Oldman played Schnabel in “Basquiat,” Clemente drew Oldman’s face opposite Schnabel’s likeness of Gallo. Schnabel gave both drawings to Gallo for appearing in the movie. But Gallo is now selling them on eBay for $25,000. Gallo — whose collections include 500 guitars, 400 microphones and 35,000 vinyl albums — told Page Six: “I’m building a new house in downtown LA. I want everything to fit . . . I’m going through things.” Gallo said he’d never hang a portrait of himself in his own home: “I don’t want it, and it’s too valuable to give away. I’d rather buy shoes.”
