Lloyd Klein, come home! The West Coast fashion designer’s entire staff, including the cleaning lady, walked out last week after their paychecks bounced. Klein sells $10,000 couture dresses and outfits to celebrities such as Natalie Cole, La Toya Jackson and most recently Jane Lynch. So staff members were shocked to find that not only were they not being paid, but that the firm’s president, John Arguelles, had no idea when Klein would be returning from his ever-extending Mediterranean vacation. While Klein’s been away for more than a month, his unpaid design interns have been running the shop, handing in more than 500 sketches via e-mail for his next collection. “The economy has been brutal,” Arguelles told us. “But we reimbursed the checks with cash the next day.” As for the employees who left, he said most were temporary interns.
