Storied Limelight getting David Barton Gym

New York’s storied Limelight is about to start a new life, as a trendy gym.

The famed former Episcopal Church and Peter Gatien nightspot, which raged in the ’80s and ’90s, in 2003 became the club Avalon, and is currently used as retail space, the Limelight Market Place. But David Barton Gym will be converting part of the Gothic Revival brownstone buildings into a workout Mecca, Page Six has learned.

Following the departure of its muscle-bound founder David Barton in November, the relocation of the gym’s flagship from 23rd Street into the former nightclub, on the corner of Sixth Avenue and 20th Street, will take place under the helm of new CEO Howard Brodsky. Studio Sofield will design the new 20,000-square-foot gym, which is planned to open in fall 2014.

David Barton will be taking over the second and third floors of Limelight, plus the first floor’s back altar for a free-weight shrine. High-end retail is being pitched for the first floor, with the current retailers expected to leave after the holidays.
